Aug. 5th, 2009 @ 11:56 pm Farmer's market bounty

On top of the chemical-free weekly baskets that we've been receiving from my cousins, hubby and I have been making every effort to get down to our local farmer's markets as much as possible. Luckily for us there are at least 4 in town, so there's always plenty to choose from, including a 100-mile market. Last time we were there we lucked into the best tasting honey ever! We have to go back for the bigger jar, we completely polished the last bottle off.

Great thing about the markets and local produce from my cousin is that we get to try new and interesting veg, like the multi-coloured carrots and white zucchini pictured above. I've also ventured into kohlrabi, jerusalem artichokes, kale, and summer squash, none of which I've ever had before.

But the biggest hit this summer has to be corn on the cob. Here's V's first ear, she nearly polished it off:

A good part of my garden re-org in the back is to make room for a veggie garden next year. I used to throw veggies in the mix, amongst the periennials, but stopped in the last few years. Next year I'm actually going to try an official garden with designated areas and borders between veg and flowers. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to go full out with a square foot garden but I'm going to try and get the most bang for my limited garden space.
Who does she think she is?
