Reading back over friends' posts for the last week has me wondering about LJ etiquette. How late is too late to post a comment on something? I have found myself looking at posts that were made on Tuesday or Wednesday and thinking 'well I missed my chance.'

Pretty funny that I think 5 days is ancient history.

Do you care? Will you post on anything? What about if you are trying to get to know a new friend and are looking back through their years of history? Will you ever post on those? How do you feel when(if?) people post on your archives?
Who does she think she is?
eh?

Me too Coreen I have been wondering about that!

I mean, when it is too late to comment on a Post or not? because sometimes, it happens that we miss some later Posts.

I know that, personaly, I wouldn't mind if someone commented even on my ever first Post. My etiquette is not to have one! ;D

But I still am not sure If I can comment on a person journal after a while.

That's a very interesting question!

Well, I did get some good answers from it too. It looks like I have a fairly easy-going bunch of friends *g*.

I have had people comment on old entries, and I too, have commented on older ones when I read back through journals. It really depends on the entry. Sometimes it is hard to tell.

A good rule, I think, is that if the entry covered some really hard ground... a personal moment... then it is probably not a good place to respond. The moment may have passed and responding might kick the dust back up. A funny commentary, a photo, or things of that nature, are usually safe.

Now, on some sites, is it considered back form to "bump" old threads. People get huffy about it. More than a week old and people get moody.

Ah well. Life.
I always enjoy it when someone takes the time to read-back in my journal and reply to something I wrote that tickled their funnybone. Always.

I read that as 'people get mouldy' the first time.

Thanks for the reply. Being on vacation for a week brought me back to a really, really long list of entries to read.

Being a history geek, I still think it is funny that fighters used to find out their war ended months after the treaties were signed, and now some people take offence if you comment 4 days after they post something.

Ok, so I am one of those who reads constantly, and feels incredibly bad if I miss a day or too. I will faithfully go back and read everything I missed, commenting as needed, even if it is two or three days back (saying "I realize this might be a settled issue but" or something like that).

I once commented on someone's "ancient history" but that was a me too thing and I wanted to point them to a post in my own journal that I opened for a week so they could read it. Then I closed it again.

Thanks. Hubby thinks I'm a little too attached to my LJ, so I agreed to a week of greatly reduced activity while we were on vacation.

I am glad you answered too. As you gain new friends, do they often read and comment on your archives? I tend to start at the beginning and read what is open to me when I've friended someone (with some this takes longer than others *g*), but I've been shy about commenting or asking questions (where it would be appropriate to do so.)

re: being attached.

I have been on LJ for over four years. When they recently opened it up for users to buy permanant accounts, I did so, without hesitations, EVEN THOUGH it is against household policy for either of us to make a purchase over $50 without the other's approval.

When I spoke to Blues about it later, he was going to suggest that I do so, so was glad that I did it.

THAT is dedication/addiction/attachment. This has been a major part of my recovery.

I'm probably not the best person to ask because I always seem to be months behind on commenting. When I do have time/motivation to comment, I usually start on page one of my friends page and work backwards until I don't feel like doing it anymore. If I end up a few days or weeks back, so be it. If someone has left the comments option on for an entry, why would they be upset to get comments on it? I'm totally open to getting comments on any of my posts, whether they're from yesterday or three years ago. Makes no difference to me.

I'm glad you decided to answer, you've certainly been at this blogging thing long enough and your schedule gets insane at times.

I comment on old entries if I feel strong about something that I missed. I tend to get busy and I make it maybe once a week on here to comment. Do...yeah, I think up to a week is good to still leave a comment. I think we all like to hear input even if it's an older entry. =-)

Heh... I post in comments when I see the entry. I don't know if that's good LJ rule or not though.

I wonder how many 'late' (not that I think you qualify) entries I will get, with people on vacation and stuff.

Hope your folks are feeling better, I understand how hard it must be on you right now.
